Sport Specific Training in London
Short answer: Sport specific training is strength and conditioning programmed around the physical demands of your sport – rather than generic gym training. Strength Lab LDN runs bespoke sport specific S&C from two studios in South West London, with coaches drawn from academy football, rugby, hockey, and athletics backgrounds.
What is sport specific training?
Sport specific training is structured S&C programming built around the physical demands of a particular sport. Instead of “general fitness,” programming is tailored to:
- Movement patterns the sport demands – sprinting, change of direction, jumping, throwing, rotation
- Energy systems involved – aerobic vs anaerobic, repeat sprint capacity, endurance
- Injury risk profiles typical to the sport – hamstrings in football, shoulders in rugby, knees in cycling
- Season schedule – in-season maintenance vs off-season build, peaking for competition
- Individual position or discipline – a centre back has different needs to a winger
The goal is to support sport performance and reduce injury risk – not compete with the sport itself.
Sports we programme for at Strength Lab LDN
Coaches at Strength Lab LDN have backgrounds across multiple sporting environments. The most common sports we programme for:
Football
Academy and adult football S&C. Speed, change of direction, hamstring resilience, plyometric capacity, in-season management.
Rugby
Strength, mass-building where needed, collision durability, shoulder and neck resilience, repeat-sprint conditioning.
Hockey
Rotational strength, hip mobility, acceleration, change of direction, lower back resilience for the flexed-trunk demands.
Running
Strength endurance, single-leg capacity, plyometric tolerance, running economy, common injury prevention (calf, Achilles, ITB, knees).
Road cycling
Posterior chain strength, hip extension power, off-bike mobility, back and neck resilience, off-season strength blocks.
Other sports
Tennis, racket sports, combat sports, martial arts, climbing – if your sport has specific physical demands, we can programme for it.
How sport specific S&C differs from regular gym training
A bodybuilding programme will build muscle. A general fitness programme will build cardiovascular health. Neither will necessarily make you a better footballer, hockey player, or runner.
Sport specific S&C considers things general training doesn’t:
- Periodisation – how the programme rises and falls across the season to peak when it matters
- Sport-relevant exercise selection – heavy back squats might not be appropriate mid-season for a cyclist
- Recovery management – training load coordinated with sport training load, not added on top
- Movement transfer – exercises chosen because they map onto sport movement, not just for general strength
This is the difference between training and “going to the gym.”
Do I need to be a professional athlete?
No. Sport specific training works at any level – club, amateur, recreational, masters, or youth. We work with:
- Adult amateur footballers, hockey players, and rugby players who want to play harder and stay injury-free
- Recreational and competitive runners training for half marathons, marathons, and trail races
- Road cyclists doing sportives, time trials, and gran fondos
- Youth athletes building foundations across multiple sports
- Masters athletes returning to competition or staying competitive into their 40s, 50s, and beyond
The principles are the same. The intensity scales to the athlete.
How does it work?
Every athlete starts with a full assessment – movement, strength, sport history, current training schedule, injury history, goals. From there your coach builds the programme around:
- What your sport demands physically
- Your current strengths and weaknesses
- Where you are in your season
- How much time you can give to S&C alongside sport training
Most sport specific clients train at Strength Lab in one of three formats:
- Personal Training – 1-to-1 coaching, ideal for technical work and heavy lifting days
- Hybrid Training – 1 PT per week plus app programming for the days you train alone
- Remote Training – fully online, ideal for athletes who travel or train at their sport club
