What Is Hybrid Training and Is It Right for Me?

What Is Hybrid Training and Is It Right for Me?

Short answer: Hybrid training combines in-person personal training sessions with app-based programming for the days you train alone. You get the technique benefits of working with a coach plus the flexibility and cost-efficiency of self-led sessions. It’s the most popular format at Strength Lab LDN.

How hybrid training works

A typical hybrid training week looks like this:

  • 1 or 2 in-person PT sessions — at the gym with your coach. These are used for technique work, heavier lifts, and sessions where having a second pair of eyes matters.
  • 2 to 3 self-led sessions — at the gym alone, following a programme written specifically for you, delivered through our app.

You’re never training “blind.” Every exercise has a video demo, target sets and reps, and a load target based on your last session. Your coach can see your logged data and adjust the programme based on how training is going.

What’s actually in the app?

The app is the engine that makes hybrid training work. It includes:

  • Your full programme — every session, every exercise, sets, reps, target load
  • Instructional videos — every movement has a demo so you know exactly what to do
  • Chat with your coach — message anytime with form questions, schedule changes, or feedback
  • Automatic tracking — exercise logs, sleep, nutrition, body weight
  • Integrations — Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, Apple Health

You log your sessions as you go. Your coach reviews them, adjusts the next week’s plan based on progress, and you carry on.

Who is hybrid training best for?

Busy professionals

If your schedule changes week to week, hybrid training adapts. You book your PT sessions when you can, and fit your self-led sessions around work, travel, and life. The programme stays consistent even when your week doesn’t.

Intermediate trainees

If you have at least 6 to 12 months of consistent training under your belt and you know your way around a gym, hybrid is the most efficient format. You don’t need every session supervised — you need the right programme, accountability, and a coach to fix the things that need fixing.

People hitting plateaus

If you’ve been training on your own for years and progress has stalled, hybrid training fixes the two most common causes: poor programming and poor technique. One session a week with a coach is usually enough to identify both and put a plan in place.

Anyone training 3+ times per week

If you’re already committed to training multiple times a week, paying for every session as 1-to-1 PT is expensive. Hybrid gives you coaching where it adds the most value (technique, heavy lifts, programme reviews) and lets you train independently the rest of the time.

Who is hybrid training NOT for?

  • Complete beginners — start with 1-to-1 Personal Training. The Kickstarter Pack (5 sessions over 6 weeks) is built for this.
  • People who want every session supervised — full PT is the better fit if you want a coach there for every rep.
  • People without gym access — hybrid assumes you have somewhere to train on your self-led days. Remote Training may be a better option.

How much does hybrid training cost?

At Strength Lab LDN Battersea Park, hybrid training is priced as monthly memberships:

  • £300 per month — 2 PT sessions per month + custom online programme via the app
  • £450 per month — 1 PT session per week + custom online programme via the app

At Wimbledon Park, hybrid pricing depends on the in-person to online split — usually discounted compared to standalone online programming. Pricing is confirmed at your initial consultation.

How does hybrid compare to other training formats?

Hybrid vs full personal training

Full PT is more expensive but gives you a coach in every session. Best for beginners, people with complex injuries, or anyone who wants total supervision. Hybrid is more cost-efficient and works for most intermediate trainees.

Hybrid vs online-only programming

Online-only programming is cheaper but you lose the in-person coaching element entirely. Hybrid keeps the technique work, accountability, and face-to-face relationship — which is what most people miss with pure online training.

Hybrid vs gym membership alone

Gym membership gives you access to equipment but no programme, no coaching, and no accountability. Hybrid gives you all three for a structured monthly cost.

What does a typical hybrid client look like?

Strength Lab LDN’s hybrid clients fall into three main groups:

  1. Lifestyle — city professionals, business owners, CEOs, parents who want high-performance coaching that fits around their schedule
  2. Performance — sport-specific trainees in football, hockey, rugby, running, road cycling who need structured S&C alongside their sport
  3. Rehabilitation — stage 2 and 3 rehab clients building strength back after injury or surgery

Most hit a sweet spot of 1 PT session per week + 2-3 self-led sessions, training 3-4 times per week total.
