Short answer: See a physio first if your knee pain is new, came from an injury or needs diagnosing. See a strength and conditioning coach once you know what’s wrong and need to rebuild strength, or when physio has finished but your knee still isn’t right. Many people in London do both. Strength Lab LDN are S&C coaches, not physios, and run strength-based knee rehab in Battersea and Wimbledon for £140.
What a physio does
The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy describes physiotherapy as helping restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability.
For a sore knee, that means working out what’s wrong, treating it, and guiding the early stages of rehab. Physios can also refer you on for scans or to a consultant if something needs a closer look.
What an S&C coach does
A strength and conditioning coach builds strength, power and fitness with a planned programme. The UK Strength and Conditioning Association is the professional body for S&C coaches in the UK.
For a knee, that means rebuilding the muscles around it, progressing the load week by week and getting you back to running, sport or just the stairs without thinking about it. We don’t diagnose or treat injuries.
Physio vs S&C coach at a glance
When to see a physio first
- The pain is new and you don’t know what caused it.
- It started with a twist, a pop or a fall, or it swelled up.
- Your knee gives way, locks or catches. The NHS advises getting advice from 111 if it gives way, locks or painfully clicks.
- It hurts at night or when you’re resting.
- You’ve just had surgery. Follow your surgical team and their physio first.
When an S&C coach is the right next step
- Physio has discharged you, but the leg still feels weak.
- The pain settles with rest but comes back when you run or train.
- You want to get back to sport and need more than a sheet of exercises.
- You’ve got long-standing knee pain from arthritis or ageing and want to stay active.
- You want to stop the same problem coming back.
How the handover works with us
1. Bring what you’ve got
Physio notes, scan results or a diagnosis all help. We build on what’s already been done, not start again.
2. Assessment
We test strength, range, single-leg control and the movements that bother you, so we know where to start.
3. A one-month programme, then review
You train in the studio, online or both, then we reassess and plan what’s next. If you’re still seeing a physio, we work alongside them.
Our knee injury rehabilitation programme is £140 for all three stages. For specific problems, see knee instability rehab in London and knee replacement rehab in Wimbledon.

FAQs
Should I see a physio or a personal trainer for knee pain?
See a physio first if the pain is new, came from an injury or hasn’t been diagnosed. Once you know what’s wrong, or physio has finished, a strength and conditioning coach can rebuild the strength around the knee.
Can a strength coach treat knee pain?
No. S&C coaches don’t diagnose or treat injuries. They build strength and control around the knee, which often reduces pain over time, and they work alongside your physio.
What happens after physio for a knee injury?
Most people need more strength work after physio ends to get fully back to running, sport or everyday activity. That’s where strength-based rehab with an S&C coach comes in.
Can I do strength rehab and physio at the same time?
Yes. Plenty of people see a physio and an S&C coach at the same time, with the physio treating the injury and the coach handling the strength work.
How much does strength-based knee rehab cost in London?
At Strength Lab LDN it’s £140 for an S&C assessment, a one-month programme built for you and a final consultation and reassessment, in Battersea, Wimbledon or online.
