What Is S&C? Strength and Conditioning Explained

Short answer: S&C stands for strength and conditioning. It’s planned, coach-led training that builds strength, power and fitness using methods from elite sport: test, train in blocks, retest. You don’t need to be an athlete. Strength Lab LDN offers S&C coaching at two private studios in Wimbledon Park (SW19) and Battersea Park (SW11), with 1-to-1 sessions from £74.

What S&C means

Strength is how much force you can produce. Conditioning is your capacity to keep working, whether that’s a 90-minute match, a 10k or a long day on your feet. An S&C coach trains both, in a planned order, so one doesn’t get in the way of the other.

The approach grew out of elite sport, where coaches had to get athletes stronger and fitter without breaking them. The same thinking works for anyone who wants measurable progress.

What S&C training covers

Strength
Squats, deadlifts, presses, pulls and lunges, loaded progressively over weeks
Power and speed
Jumps, throws and faster lifts, used where your goals or sport need them
Conditioning
Intervals on bikes, ski ergs or sleds, matched to what you’re training for
Mobility and control
The range and stability you need to lift well and stay injury resistant

How an S&C programme works

  • Assess. Your coach looks at your training history, injuries and goals, watches how you move and records starting numbers.
  • Plan. Training is written in blocks of several weeks, each with a clear focus, with sets, reps and loads set in advance.
  • Progress. Loads and volume build week by week, with lighter weeks planned in.
  • Retest. At the end of the block you test again, and the numbers shape the next plan.

That cycle is the main difference from a workout made up on the day. We walk through a first 12 weeks in strength and conditioning coach in Wimbledon.

Who S&C is for

Our clients fall into three broad groups:

  • Lifestyle. Busy professionals and parents who want to get stronger and fitter with a plan that fits their week.
  • Rehabilitation. People who have been cleared by a physio or doctor and want to rebuild strength and get back to what they love.
  • Performance. Footballers, hockey and rugby players, runners and road cyclists training for their sport. More in sport specific training in London.

Age and starting point don’t rule you out. Loads are set to you, and a beginner and an experienced lifter can follow the same principles at very different weights.

S&C, personal training and physio

Personal training covers any 1-to-1 coaching. S&C is a specific way of coaching, with testing and planned blocks. In the UK, the UK Strength and Conditioning Association is the professional body for S&C coaches. We compare the job titles in fitness coach vs personal trainer.

S&C coaches are not physios. A physio diagnoses and treats injuries. We work with people once a physio or doctor has cleared them to train, and build the strength back up from there. Knees are the most common reason, so we run a knee injury rehabilitation programme: £140 for an assessment, a one-month programme and a final review.

FAQs

What does S&C stand for?

S&C stands for strength and conditioning. It’s coach-led training that develops strength, power and fitness through planned blocks, with testing at the start and end of each block.

Do I need to be an athlete to do S&C?

No. The methods come from elite sport, but they work for anyone who wants to get stronger and fitter. Loads are set to your level, and many of our clients are busy professionals and parents.

What is the difference between S&C and personal training?

Personal training covers any 1-to-1 coaching. S&C is a specific approach: you’re assessed, given a written programme in blocks and retested, with the focus on strength, power and conditioning rather than a workout on the day.

Is an S&C coach the same as a physio?

No. A physio diagnoses and treats injuries. An S&C coach builds strength and fitness, and works with you once a physio or doctor has cleared you to train. If you’re unsure whether you’re ready, check with your GP or physio first.
